Sonobe Lamp
2025

Medium: Red Oak
Dimension: 12" x 9” x 6”

This project is a continuation of my piece Tsuru. For Tsuru, I developed a workflow for cutting veneer into mitered tringles. The triangles come together to create a spikey ball that I modeled after the sonobe origami unit. I use this form to make the lampshade for this nightlight.

Red oak has an open and porous end grain, and when cut thin, you can see light shining through. This red glow reminds me of the red that you see when you put your hand up to the sun or shine a flashlight through your hand. The comforting red glow of life.
